TOURNAMENT FEATURES

  • Two contest areas.  Two (2) full-size tatami areas.  Depending on early registrations, a third contest area may be added.

At the SHIAI SITE: Broadway Recreation Center, 59 E. Broadway Rd. Mesa, AZ.

All athletes must appear in-person to verify participation.  Refer to the schedule for times.

Ø      Draw: The draw will be conducted on Friday evening. Each division will be assigned to a mat.

Ø      Time of Kata Competition to be determined; Age/Weight Shiai competition will be on Saturday, October 28th (5-year age groups starting at 30-34 years; Olympic weight categories); "Open" Shiai category for each age group (no weight limits) and Team Shiai competition will be held on Sunday, October 29th.

Ø      Eligibility: The event is open to any athlete who is a member in good standing of any National Judo Organization affiliated with the Pan American Judo Union (USA Judo, Judo Canada, Judo Brazil, etc.), is a permanent resident of North, Central or South America, and is 30 years of age or older on October 28th, 2006 for Kata, and October 28th, 2006 for Shiai and Open.

Ø       Referee Clinic Friday evening. It is possible that a member of the Pan American Judo Union will conduct this clinic.

Ø      Judogi and belt Colors: Competitors MUST have a white Judogi. Blue Judogi’s are optional and may only be worn by the competitor who is called first in a pair of contestants (the “blue” side).  In all matches where the both competitors are wearing white gi’s, both competitors will remove their grade belts and wear a blue or white belt to identify the contestant’s designated color for the match.  Contestants are requested to bring their own blue and white belts for use on the “blue” or “white” side.  This will insure that your belt will fit properly.  Mark your belt with your name or your club’s name.

PJU Membership: All contestants must be members of PJU/UPJ directly – that means that they must have a PJU/UPJ Membership card. This Membership can be purchased during the time of registration (cost US$20.00) per year.

TOURNAMENT REGISTRATION/CHECK-IN AND WEIGH-IN

 

KATA: Friday, October 27th, 2006 5 PM – 9 PM at the BRC (Broadway Rec Center). All Kata athletes must appear in-person to verify participation during this time period. Number of competitors may be limited to 5 to 10 couples per Kata. Further limitations may apply (see Kata rules).

AGE/WEIGHT SHIAI, OPEN, and TEAM: Friday, October 27th, 2006 5 PM - 9 PM at the BRC.    All athletes must appear in-person to verify participation and weigh-in during this time period.  Coaches must appear at this time to register and receive their floor pass credential.

LATE OPEN: During the Age/Weight Shiai competition on Saturday, October 28th, at the Tournament Site, time and location will be announced during the tournament.  Individuals may enter into, or withdraw from the Open Categories at this time.

LATE TEAM:  During the Age/Weight Shiai competition on Saturday, October 28th at the Tournament Site, time and location will be announced during the tournament. Teams may enter into, or withdraw from the Team Competition at this time.

COACHES:  Friday, October 27th, 2006 5 PM - 9 PM at the BRC. ALL COACHES must check-in with tournament officials on Friday, October 27th, 2006 between 5 PM and 9 PM to receive credentials and floor passes.  International Coaches and USA/Canadian nationally certified coaches ONLY will be provided credentials. Only coaches with such credentials will be allowed to coach matside (one coach per athlete in the appropriate coaches chair.)  Coaches should submit the Coach Credentials/Floor Pass Application Form located elsewhere in this packet.

For Shiai, one entry fee authorizes an athlete to compete in one Age/Weight division, the Open division for his/her age group, and one team.

For Kata, one entry fee authorizes an athlete to compete in a maximum of three (3) katas (combination of single and/or mixed gender).  Both Tori and Uke must pay separate registration fees.

Incomplete entry forms or forms without entry fees enclosed will be considered late entries and those contestants will be expected to pay the US$110.00 walk-up entry fee.

AWARDS

One (1) Gold, one (1) Silver, and two (2) Bronze medals will be awarded in each division.
Exceptions:  In Kata and Round Robin divisions, only one (1) bronze medal will be awarded.
Both Kata competitors in a pair will receive medals.  All team members, including the alternate, will receive medals.

KATA CATEGORIES:

Separate categories of competition will be conducted as follows:
1) both partners Female, 2) both partners Male, 3) mixed partners (one male, one female)
An athlete may compete in a maximum of three (3) different Katas. Same person cannot be both Uke and Tori in the same Kata (either with same or with a different partner) and cannot enter same Kata more than once (even with different partners).

Shiai Rules:

General: The Masters Championships will be conducted in accordance with the Contest Rules, Organization Code and Sporting Code of the International Judo Federation with the following modifications.

Match Lengths:  Under 60 years old: 3 minutes for men and women; 60 years old or older:  2 1/2  minutes for men and women.

Golden Score: Under 40 years old: Golden Score will be in effect; 40 years old or older: No Golden Score.


Uniforms:
White Judogi is mandatory; Blue Judogi is optional and may only be worn by the competitor on the "blue" side.  In all matches where the both competitors are wearing white gi’s, both competitors will remove their grade belts and wear a blue or white belt to identify the contestant’s designated color for the match.  Contestants are requested to bring their own blue and white belts for use on the “blue” or “white” side.  This will insure that your belt will fit properly.  Mark your belt with your name or your club’s name.


Method of resolving uncontested divisions:
In the event that a competitor is uncontested in his or her division, the following options are available, beginning with the oldest uncontested competitor and progressing to the youngest.

1. Remain uncontested.
2. Move down in age group, same weight until competition is found, OR
3. If an uncontested competitor must move down more than one age group in order to find competition, he or she may choose to move up in weight within their proper age group.

Athletes may compete in only one age/weight division and the Open division.


Method(s) of Elimination:

1. Five (5) or less: Round robin (every competitor in the division fights every other competitor).
2. Six (6) or above: Modified double elimination. 1st and 2nd will be pure knockout (single elimination). All others will compete in a "loser's" pool until there are two left.  Both will receive 3rd place.

Interpretation of all Shiai, Kata and Team Rules and all statements as well as a correction of any ambiguous or incorrect statement in this whole Document is up to the Tournament Co-Directors or a Person designated by the Tournament Co-Directors for that particular purpose.

Note: $10.00 of YOUR tournament registration fee will be used for your Masters Judo Association yearly membership fee. If you have your last year’s membership card send (mail) its copy with your registration package.

Team Rules :

  1. A team shall consist of 5 male, or 3 female players plus one (1) alternate.  All players shall have the same country of citizenship with the exception that one (1) player may be a “guest” from a different country, if desired.
  2. a.)  Male teams shall have a minimum total age of 200 years, i.e. average age of 40 years, including if and when the alternate is used.
    b.)  Female teams shall have no total age restriction.
  3. The alternate may be used at any time, for any reason (injury, tactical, etc.), but if used, the player who is replaced may not return to competition.  After the alternate is utilized, if any team member cannot continue, the team will play “short handed” in that position.
  4. Teams will compete in order of lightest to heaviest.  If an alternate is used, s/he shall be positioned according to his/her actual weight.
  5. All matches, regardless of the age of the players, shall be three (3) minutes in duration with no “golden score”.  A draw (hikiwake) will be awarded if there is no score at the end of 3 minutes.
  6. The winner will be determined by: a) the team which has the most wins; b) if number of wins are equal, then the winner will be the team with the most points according to: ippon = 10, Waza-ari = 7, Yuko = 5, Koka = 3, two Waza-ari’s = 10; c) if points are tied, a pair of contestants will be selected by random draw and will replay their match – if score is tied at the end of 3 minutes, the referees will immediately use flags (best of three decision) to determine the winner in this one match only.


Kata Rules:

Kata Competition will be conducted according to the rules of USA Judo and the Masters Association.  For details contact Mr. Virgil Bowles (PAMA) virgilbowles@juno.com the Masters Kata Head Judge.

Ony white gis and rank belts will be used in Kata.

Only wood or plastic weapons will be allowed in Kata.

There may be a limit imposed on a Maximum number of Kata couples allowed to compete in each Kata. (Such as five, per Tournament Co-Directors’ discretion) after which the Co-Directors could allow an additional couple to participate in that Kata provided that their country has no participants registered in that Kata yet, up to a Global Maximum number of couples (such as ten per Co-Directors’ discretion) in each Kata. Kata participants will be registered on a first come, first registered basis (in the order of received complete Registration Packages). For Example: If there were 3 US and 2 Canadian couples registered in the Nage No Kata, no additional US or Canadian couple would be allowed to register (to exceed the No. 5 limit) while e.g. one Mexican and one Columbian couple may be allowed to register to a total of seven Nage No Kata couples at that time. (Not exceeding No. 10 Global Maximum).
