Dear Mr. Murius L. Vizer
My name is Darren E. Barnes. I live in the north west of the United States, Spokane Washington. In a short, here is the history of me and my judo. I have been practicing judo for 41 years. My teacher is Robey R. Reed a 9th dan. I have spent my life at teaching judo and every aspectof the sport. I have students from all over the world. Since the rules have changed, people have a lot of questions about the point system, and international competition. IOC members have stressed a concern about the Olympic competition and the exclusion of countries unable to compete on the international stage.
After talking to a high number of executive IOC members I think Judo my not be a sponsored Olympic sport, if prize money is given to the athletes. This is in direct contras to the Olympic charter. I have expressed to these people that there is no money given to athletes in Olympic sponsored competition. When informing that there is a way to have a separation of athlete and state when opens, crowns and so on. These tournaments can be professional tournaments. They do this with tennis for example
What this means is that the point system has to be separated for Olympic sponsored tournaments and professional tournaments. Several people have told me they my bring suit to the governing body of judo if this is not corrected in which I personally understand; however, after reading what was put out there to the rest of the world. The problem is growing if it is not cleared up soon Judo could be kicked out of the Olympics.
I don't think you have been advised properly about the Olympic sponsored tournaments. The Asian games, Pan American games the European championships, and so on, are set for the Olympics and are for athletes to represent their respectable countries. I know we can't change this fact. The other representative's from various sports know this as fact. I see my sport in a dilemma and turmoil between professional athletes, representing athletes, a scoring system that has come under fire, along with a point system that can kick judo out of the Olympics.
Here in the United States Judo has come under fire. My dojo started the first woman's competitions in the world. I have seen people fight in association wars to hurt other athletes for the simple reason they compete for a different federation. I have seen the scoring system go from wazari, ippon to changes that don't make much sense. I would like to speak to you personally. Because I believe with out help Judo might be excluded as an Olympic sport.
