Bahamas Judo Student named Youth Ambassador to Olympics
Erika
Rahming, an 11th grade St. Augustine student, was chosen by the Bahamas Olympic
Association to represent the Bahamas as a Youth Ambassador to the Beijing
Olympics in 2008. In addition to having a very high GPA Erika also has an
impressive tournament record both nationally and internationally. She is the
winner of the 2008 Milo Classic and has placed 3rd in the 2007 Pan American
Junior Championships and the Caribbean Junior Championships, both held in the
Dominican Republic.
Erika has been practicing competive Judo for the past three years and is a brown
belt in the sport. Her interest lies in coaching and young athlete development.
"I'm really excited to be chosen and I will represent the Bahamas well", says a
smiling Erika. Youth Ambassadors will attend a three week camp in Beijing where
they will participate in cultural events while observing the athletic
competition.
"This is big news for the sport of Judo," says Bahamas Judo Federation Secretary
Keith Davies, " it is clear from the selection of Erika that the sport of Judo
has taken a huge step forward. We look forward to expanding the sport of Judo
throughout the Bahamas to make it a national sport to positively impact the
lives and attitudes of young people in the Bahamas."
