After
more than 12 years as the general treasurer of the Pan-American Judo Union,
Bolivia’s Edgar Claure decided it was time for a new
challenge. So, campaigning under the slogan ‘efficiency, effectiveness,
economy’, he gave an impassioned speech to the IJF Congress and successfully
replaced Kuwait’s Obaid Al Anzi as IJF general treasurer.
It was a close run thing with Mr Claure winning 91 votes to Mrt Al Anzi’s 72 but it was enough to bring about a change in position. Mr Claure, and Olympian for Bolivia in 1984, runs his own construction business and comes from a strong financial background. And he hopes to use this to help him keep the IJF’s finances in order. But he has a big job on his hands as he will continue to work as PJU treasurer as well. Mr Claure said: “I don’t think the two roles will be any more difficult than doing one job. With the help of the IJF Executive and the PJU I think I will be able to overlap the two roles so that doing one helps me do the other.”
In his campaign speech, Mr Claure spoke of the three ‘Es’ he hopes to bring to his work. It was an effective slogan but also a realistic one. Mr Claure said: “By this what I mean is I want to bring economic stability and more effective use of money and I think I will be able to provide this. I am a man of good faith and top experience and I would like to devote myself to the service of the IJF.” After 12 years of exemplary service for the Pan-American Union, Mr Claure is in as good a position as anyone to ensure the IJF funds are in safe hands.
