THE QUALIFICATION SYSTEM FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES PROPOSED BY THE FIJ:
AN EXCLUSIVELY EUROPEAN BUSINESS!!
The International Judo Federation has published the new qualification system of the Judo for the Olympic Games. This system based on a world classification, which will be set up from a serie of tournaments whose large majority will proceed in Europe, will penalize the “small” countries, especially those in America which seem particularly targetted.
Indeed, if we had applied this qualification system, which is now published on the site of the European Union of Judo during the last Olympic Games in Beijing, such a system would have led to the table below. Table from which one can draw the following conclusions, among others:
The percentage of participation per continent (number of athletes) would take Oceania from 4 to 3%; Africa from 9 to 11%; America from 22 to 14%; Asia from 25 to 22%; Europe from 40 to 50%.
For America the number of athletes per country would be: Cuba from 14 to 12; Brazil from 13 to 11; Canada from 5 to 7; The USA from 10 to 2; Argentina from 8 to 2; Colombia from 2 to 2; Venezuela of 7 to 1; Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Ecuador from 3 to 1; Mexico 2 to 1; Haiti, El El Salvador 1 to 1
For Asia one can retain: South Korea from 14 to 10; Ubekistan from 8 to 4; and Africa with Morocco from 4 to 1; Tunisia from 6 to 4 and Algeria from 10 to 8.
Therefore, with a finer analysis going with country by country we could prove that the only recipients of the new system of qualification remain the countries from Europe, which see their numbers of qualified athletes for the Olympic Games increase noticeably. For instance, the United Kingdom would see its number of athletes growing from 6 to 10.
It is clear that the proposed system, using world classification as a criterion of reference, does not favor the non European countries. Countries that will have to put up with the frequent and expensive trips to Europe where the major tournaments will take place and will count for the world classification. Furthermore, not enough contented with the exclusive use of world classification for the direct qualification, the system subordinates the attribution of the continental quotas (1 athlete by country!!) … with the same world classification from which would be deduced a continental classification??
For all those reasons, the majority of the FIJ Members should reject the proposed system as being discriminatory and biased, if they are ever given the opportunity.
